Richmond Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: What do wild life rehabilitators do with baby skunks

Skunks are animals that dwell in the wild and are omnivorous by nature. They tend to eat both meat and vegetation, and basically anything that they find. This is the prime reason why skunks end up around human households in search of food since houses often contain food in excess. While baby skunks are visually very cute and appealing, they can be equally annoying and messy in case one finds a way into your house. So you are better off at a safe distance.

Skunks indeed create a big mess on the human property and in case they find a permanent hideout, they may start a family in there. This will result in a lot of trouble. Moreover, skunks tend to release a very nasty odor in case they get threatened. Such an odor can linger around in your place for a very long time. On top of that, skunks also carry rabies that which they contract with other humans and spread via a bite. And since owning a skunk as a pet is illegal, you will have to call a wildlife rehabilitator in case you find a baby skunk in your place.

Wildlife rehabilitators are trained in handling baby skunks. They are trained dare making use of traps to safely catch one and to transport it for better care. These traps happen to be one-way exclusion, which prevents the animals from getting out once they are in without hurting them.

In case a baby skunk is old enough to look after itself, wildlife rehabilitators will take the skunk away from your house and release them in a new suitable place. This is because release one near your house would not solve the problem as the baby skunk may just make his way into your house again.

As far as orphaned baby skunks go, it is totally out of the question to release them out in the wild again as they will simply not survive. This is because orphaned baby skunks need the assistance of their mothers or of trained rehabilitators in order to survive. So in this case, the wildlife rehabilitators will bring the baby skunk into a wildlife center where adequate care will be provided to the baby skunk until of course, it is big enough to take its own care.

Otherwise, of course, a baby skunk will die to starvation. Mostly, skunks are born in the spring season. This is the time when most wildlife rehabilitators will be out on the look for orphaned baby skunks. Mostly, their job will involve feeding the skunk and keep it in a warm environment so as to allow full growth.

Better than a layman, wildlife rehabilitators are trained at handling baby skunks and at looking after them. Moreover, they also know better whether a baby skunk needs assistance (which is mostly when it is orphaned) because otherwise if the nest is found, the mother can take its care very well.

So in case, you do end up finding a baby skunk, instead of handling it on your own, reach out to your nearest wildlife rehabilitation center.
